The days of ancient Thera, before the rise of the nine gods, were much more feral and savage then they are today. Magik, while an ancient concept, was ungoverned. Those who had the means and ability to cast spells often forced themselved into power. Seeing themselves as superior to all others who could not.

The dominant races during this time were the two dragon species as well as the Elwar'thauren, a breed of humanoids very in touch with all life around them. They had a strong belief in animal totems. That each person had a certain spiritual link to an animal. Over the generations the magikal energies surrounding Thera began to give the offspring of the Elwar'thauren the features of their totem animals. Thus the Theran species was born.

Mathazar was one of the greatest spellcasters that Thera had ever seen. Apon seeing these changes, he believed that the time of the Elwar'Thauren was coming to an end. That Therans and Dragons were the soul of the future and the Elwar'Thauren were doomed to be destroyed or slaves. He was willing to enforce these beliefs through any means necessary.

Because of his uncanny magik abilities, he thought himself a god. He gained a legion of loyal follwers who also believed that. It was their understanding that he had a divine right to lead the Theran people.

There were few that would stand up against him.

About the picture itself...

Yep. More playing around with concepts for the ancient days of Thera. Mathy here is meant to be the opposite of Atherdoru, the dragon character that I did concept art for a while back. I thought it would be interesting to have two characters who were the complete opposite of each other since Therans believe strongly in balance. The idea that for ever amount of good there is an equal amount of bad... for every action there is an equally strong reaction... you get the idea... :p

I want to play around with Ather and Mathy's concepts a bit more. I've already begun a character sheet for Atherdoru and want to do one for Mathazar as well... but it would be interesting to see the two in the same picture as well.

This picture itself was done relatively quickly. Mostly to lay down Mathazar's color scheme and markings. There are parts of the picture I'm happy with and others that I am indifferent about.

It is very interesting how you put Thera's history and describe the nature of the Dragons and the animales that inhabited it during the old days. I like the story so far, do you have a website with detailed information about Thera and its dragons and all? I got really interested and would love to read it =)

By the way, the picture is beautifil, Mathazar's pose is great. Awesome piece of art.
