I don't mind fan art, I have asked for some myself, so I guess I am "pro fan art" in most cases. As long as you have fun making the work of art I see no real objection to it.

I don't get why anyone feels the need to HATE On Fan-Art.

Personally, I absolutely adore both seeing it and making it.

Every now and then someone creates a fictional universe or character (or in some cases, REAL people and places) that captures the imagination of millions. These things become rallying points around which people can gather around a common interest.

When you like something, you often find you have a desire to show that appreciation in some way. Some do it by collecting things which reference or celebrate that thing, and others do it by CREATING such things.

The original creators behind these cultural icons obviously do not have the time, or even the interest in elaborating upon their creations in every possible way their fans desire. This leaves an enormous demand for creative content which the originators can not possibly provide.

Fan artists fulfill that demand.

Art, figurines, fan-fiction novels, comics, sculptures, music, expanded-universe/fan-ficton OC's ...

So long as there are people out there enthusiastic about creating these things, and an audience hungry to gobble it all up, I see absolutely no problem with any of it.

My "Favorites" gallery here on DA is filled with at least 25-55% fan-art I suspect, and I personally have been hammering out a conceptual plot for a long and epic Fan-Fiction based on the StarFox videogame series for years now.

Not everyone with the will to be creative and expressive are able to come up with characters as worthy of giving a $#*% about as Harry Potter or Naruto or Han Solo or James Bond or Mickey Mouse or whatever ... but most anyone who enjoys such characters and the worlds they inhabit have little lack of inspiration for the potential those iconic creations hold, and do not hesitate to share that.

Whether sharing our love for these creations exactly as they are, or our ideas for what they COULD be if taken a step further or in a different direction ... Fan-Art is a beautiful and beloved thing, and has my full and unwavering support.

I don't understand people who say fanart lacks creativity. How is Naruto doing a backflip over a lava pit on a snowboard any less creative than an OC doing the same?

Probably because they didn't come up with the character design. Then again, the same people who'd whine about creativity probably wouldn't if it was just a totally average/generic person... even though really, the only difference is the subject in the middle.

I've never quite understood that view...

I love fan art, if a person really likes the character or series or whatever, and does it in their own style it can be really great.
